Configuring a schedule for daily file level backup in HP Data Protector

0

Assuming you want to backup your files from Monday to Friday as incremental backup at 20:00 hours and a full backup on Saturday at 14:00 hours and the first full backup of the month will be the monthly backup for the past month here´s how you can configure it w/o changing anything after this adjustment.

Create a file level backup job for all your systems as you want to but leave the schedule unconfigured. Name them e.g. Daily, Weekly, Monthly and Yearly so that you´ll be able to distinguish your different jobs.

There´s an easy way to achive this by creating one job and copy this job afterwards.

The config files for the Schedules are in following folders:

from Windows 2008 on:
%ProgramData%\OmniBack\Config\server\Schedules or %ProgramData%\OmniBack\Config\server\Barschedules

Previous Windows systems:
Data_Protector_home\Config\server\Schedules or Data_Protector_home\Config\server\Barschedules

Linux:
etc/opt/omni/server/schedules or /etc/opt/omni/server/barschedules

Daily

-holidays on
-incr -protection -weeks 1
-every
-day Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri
	-at 20:00

Weekly

-full -protection -weeks 4
-every
	-day Sat
	-at 14:00

-full
-exclude
	-day 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
	-at 14:00

Monthly

-full -protection -weeks 52
-every
        -day 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
        -at 14:00
-full
-exclude
-day Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sun
        -at 14:00

-full
-exclude
        -day 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 -month Jan
        -at 14:00

Yearly

-full -protection -permanent
-every
        -day 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 -month Jan
        -at 14:00
-full
-exclude
-day Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sun
        -at 14:00

But there´s also the possibility to configure your backup job as one if you want to.

-holidays on
-incr -protection -weeks 1
-every
-day Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri
	-at 20:00

-full -protection -weeks 4
-every
	-day Sat
	-at 14:00

-full
-exclude
	-day 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
	-at 14:00

-full -protection -weeks 52
-every
        -day 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
        -at 14:00

-full
-exclude
-day Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sun
        -at 14:00

-full
-exclude
	-day 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 -month Jan
	-at 14:00

-full -protection -permanent
-every
        -day 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 -month Jan
        -at 14:00

-full
-exclude
-day Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sun
        -at 14:00

Failure with HP DataProtector 7.0.1 Agent for MaxDB using 3.x Linux Kernel

0

After updating to DP 7.00.100 we´ve tried to use the determined kernel version (3.xx) for our SLES 11 servers. The disk agent works fine but as we tried to backup our MaxDB database the backup aborted and we weren´t able to backup the database. After changing the used kernel inside the cell_info file to a previous used (2.5xxx) and working entry we were able to backup the database.

How to create a x64 or x86 WMI Filter

0

I had to distribute some applications via GPOs depending to the underlying OS architecture.

Here´s how I solved this problem.

I´ve created 2 WMI Filter Objects inside the Group Policy Managament Console and associated them with the GPOs I´ve already created

x86:

SELECT AddressWidth FROM Win32_Processor WHERE AddressWidth =’32’

x64:

SELECT AddressWidth FROM Win32_Processor WHERE AddressWidth =’64’

Notes/Domino 9 Open Beta

0

IBM has announced the open beta of Notes/Domino 9. This version includes all earlier by IBM mentioned social features you´re knowing from facebook etc. and the contents of the maintenance release 8.5.4 which will be released later in 2013.

The 8.5.4 maintenance release of Notes won´t have the social features included.

You can download all software components of this beta via following link:

https://www14.software.ibm.com/webapp/iwm/web/reg/signup.do?source=swg-beta-nodoso&S_PKG=dl&CT=ISM0007

Update:
There won´t be a 8.5.4 release as IBM has announced in their fix list ( http://www-10.lotus.com/ldd/fixlist.nsf/(progress)/854 )

Release 8.5.3 is the last planned/scheduled maintenance release (MR) for the 8.5.x code stream. Notes/Domino 8.5.x will continue to be supported for a minimum of 5+3 years (following IBM policy). In lieu of producing a Notes/Domino 8.5.4 MR, 8.5.3 fix packs will be provided. Building on the momentum of the fixes and features in IBM Notes/Domino 9.0 Social Edition, IBM will produce a 9.0.1 maintenance release and future fix packs and maintenance releases beyond 9.0.1. Customers who have deployed Notes/Domino 8.x should evaluate the benefits of 9.0 Social Edition. The Social Edition release has all the bug fixes that 8.5.4 would have had plus a robust set of features.

Session hangs in DataProtector

0

In some cases your backup job may hang in HP DataProtector.

Here are some steps to solve this issue:

1. Make sure no backup sessions are running

2. Start task manager

3. Sort processes by name

4. Kill bsm.exe

Now close and re-open your DataProtector GUI. There shouldn´t be any sessions in the monitor view.

If there still is a running backup job in your “Internal database -> Sessions” view open a command prompt and enter the following command:

omnidbutil -clear

and hit enter.

After this the session should be displayed as aborted or failed.

Automating FTP tasks with cron

0

If you´re using ftp to download files from a contractor such as a logistics provider you can automate it using cron and the .netrc file.

1. Create a .netrc file in the home directory of the user who will be executing the script.

2. Open the .netrc file, “paste” the following text into it and change it

machine FQDN_OR_IP_ADDRESS
login USERNAME
password PASSWORD

macdef MACRONAME
prompt off
bin
cd PATH
lcd LOCALPATH
mget *

3. Enter crontab -e and hit enter

4. “Paste” the following text into it and change it

MM HH * * * echo "$ MACRONAME" | ftp FQDN_OR_IP_ADDRESS

After applying this your files are being downloaded to the location and at the time you´ve defined.

Check if a service is running via PowerShell

0

I´ve found a script in another blog by Anders Mikkelsen which I found really good and quite helpful since I´ve experienced that different services on some machines have the habit not to start after the server is being rebooted because of an update or reboot cycle at night.

function FuncCheckService{
    param($ServiceName)
    $arrService = Get-Service -Name $ServiceName
    if ($arrService.Status -ne "Running"){
        Start-Service $ServiceName
FuncMail -To "to-email@domain.com" -From "from-mail@domain.com" -Subject "Servername : ($ServiceName) service started." -Body "Service $ServiceName started" -smtpServer "relay.mailserver.com"
    }
}
function FuncMail {
    #param($strTo, $strFrom, $strSubject, $strBody, $smtpServer)
    param($To, $From, $Subject, $Body, $smtpServer)
    $msg = new-object Net.Mail.MailMessage
    $smtp = new-object Net.Mail.SmtpClient($smtpServer)
    $msg.From = $From
    $msg.To.Add($To)
    $msg.Subject = $Subject
    $msg.IsBodyHtml = 1
    $msg.Body = $Body
    $smtp.Send($msg)
}
FuncCheckService -ServiceName "VMware VirtualCenter Server"

Just copy and paste this script, save it as a ps1 file and schedule it to run every x minutes…
